General Francis Ogolla was a Kenyan military officer. He was born on February 12, 1962, and died on April 18, 2024. General Francis Ogolla was the first chief of defence forces in post-independence Kenya to die in office.

In 1984, General Francis Ogolla started his military career by joining the Kenya Defense Forces as a 2nd lieutenant in the Kenyan Air Force.

His ambition and commitment led him to pursue further training in the United States Air Force, where he honed his skills as a fighter pilot. This training helped him establish a foundation for future leadership roles.

Ogolla’s educational background is equally impressive, having studied at prestigious institutions such as the École Militaire de Paris, the National Defence College of Kenya, Egerton University, and the University of Nairobi. These academic pursuits equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of military leadership in a rapidly evolving world.

In 2018, he assumed the role of Commander of the Kenya Air Force, showcasing his leadership acumen and operational expertise. Subsequently, he was appointed Vice Chief of Defense Forces, further solidifying his position as a key figure within the military hierarchy.

However, it was in April 2023 that Ogolla reached the pinnacle of his career when he was appointed Chief of Defense Forces by President William Ruto. This appointment, while celebrated by many, was not without controversy. Allegations surfaced regarding Ogolla’s involvement in a national security council delegation accused of attempting to influence the outcome of the 2022 general election. Despite these claims, President Ruto stood by Ogolla, emphasizing his qualifications and integrity.

General Ogolla, a respected leader in Kenya’s military, sadly passed away in a helicopter crash on April 18, 2024, along with nine others. A memorial was held in Nairobi on April 20, followed by a state funeral in his hometown of Ngiya, Siaya County, on April 21. Many people came to honor him and remember his service.
